During this period many national reputed schools and colleges started functioning from Trivandrum. It is to be noted that the research institutes and educational institutes are always interlinked, one sector influence the growth of the other sector. The number of research institutes in the Trivandrum district is one of the important factors which helped Trivandrum to get into the educational infrastructure league of its own. Trivandrum has always featured in the most preferred destinations for establishing premier research/educational institutes. Testimony to this is the establishment of Sainik school in early 60’s and recent decision by GOI to establish two premier institutes Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Trivandrum.

The work is expected to be completed soon and will open to flight carriers by early next year. The new terminal will allow more flight handling capacity and this will help to get operational license for airline carriers who are waiting to start operations from Trivandrum International Airport. The terminal will have all the facilities as in a world-class.
The international airport which is situated on the National Highway is well connected through intermediate/ring roads and NH bypass to Technopark, commercial centres, hospitals, research institutions, tourism destinations and other urban centers.

Rail Connectivity
Trivandrum Central is the largest, busiest and the cleanest railway station in Kerala. Trivandrum Central and Trivandrum Railway Division have been appreciated at the national level for its efficient functioning. The terminal connects all the important destinations in India. It operates weekly long and short distance trains to all the important destinations in India. The electrification and doubling of the entire Trivandrum railway division has enabled to reduce the traveling time considerably.
Trivandrum terminal is one of the most technology advanced stations in India. The central railway station is equipped with computerized train control charting system, Interactive touch screen kiosks, Plasma-based arrival and departure displays, centralized inter active voice response system, automated announcements, LED displays, automated platform vending machines and call centre. The ever increasing revenue and passengers have prompted the central railway board authorities to make sure that the central railway stations is always way ahead in providing all the infrastructure for customer satisfaction. Keeping in this line the GOI has decided to upgrade Trivandrum railway station in to a world class terminal.
As city spread its wings toward the outskirts the necessary infrastructure needs to be in place to accommodate the new demands. The establishment of Technopark way back in 90’s initiated this process. Even though, Trivandrum is expanding towards all directions 70-80% of the development is concentrated towards the NH by-pass due to its proximity to International Airport and other important destinations. With Technopark, educational institutions, airport and proposed bus terminal the number of train commuters is going to increase in the coming years. To support the demand, GOI and railway has decided to provide the necessary infrastructure by developing/upgrading the KochiVeli railway terminal into a satellite terminal of Trivandrum Central. The Kochiveli terminal is easily accessible from all these important destinations. It is situated a stone throw away from international airport and is easily accessible from them National Highway. Apart from Central station; the satellite terminal Trivandrum - Kochuveli situated on the National Highway handle long distance trains to all the important destinations India.
With the completion of development/upgrading works at the Trivandrum Central station and kochuveli –Trivandrum Satellite Terminal the train journey will be more exciting.

Road Connectivity
Roads, besides connecting different destinations, play a vital role in defining the economic development as well as the quality of life. A well connected and maintained road network opens up remote areas stimulating growth in the agricultural and the industrial sector apart from providing comfortable and pleasurable ride and reducing the number of lives lost in traffic accidents. Trivandrum, even from its pre-independence era is known for its clean and wide roads. The district is well connected to its immediate neighbours. The road network in Trivandrum district covering 1900 kms consists of national highways, state highways, district roads and rural roads. NH 47 which runs entire length of Trivandrum connects Trivandrum with its immediate neighbouring state Tamil Nadu.
The ever growing city population has forced the government officials to come up with road network improvement project called City Road Improvement Program [CRIP]. 42 kms of city road will be improved and built newly under this program. The program aims to widen the existing roads, built new roads, underpass and flyovers. The entire stretch will have international standard specific dividers, carriageways, walkways, road safety sign boards, signals and street lights. The first phase of the project is over and the second phase has commenced. With the completion of this project all the important destinations within the city will be linked effectively.
Trivandrum is one such place in the world, to be precise, where all the important projects lie along a single straight road which extends to about 42 kms. Yes, the 42 km by-pass road which runs from Parasala to Kazhakootam is being mentioned. The NH by-pass host/will host many existing/proposed projects like Trivandrum International Airport,Trivandrum Satellite Railway station,Technopark,World famous Tourist destinations Kovalam, Poovar, Chowara, Veli,Aakulam International Convention Centre,Brahmos Aerospace Trivandrum Ltd,Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre,Campuses from IT giants Infosys and TCS,UST Global Technopark Phase III,Technocity, proposed inter state bus terminal,Vizhinjam International Deepwater Container Transshipment Terminal
Where in the world is there, such a network which facilitates movement from one international destination to another destination in a single stretch. NH by-pass is slowly but surely turning out to be the nerve centre of Trivandrum. The new international airport terminal which opens directly to the NH bypass will act as a catalyst to the transformation. Imagine the situation, in 10 -15 years NH by-pass is going to buzzle with business activities. Keeping these factors in mind The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to upgrade the NH-bypass to six lanes and provide the supportive amenities. The NHAI has also decided to develop the NH 47 to four lanes.
The 42 kms of City Road Improvement Program and the development of NH will enable easy flow of traffic along the length and breadth of Trivandrum.
